My Story: Creativity through Chaos

Growing up, my life was characterized by constant change and uncertainty, which led to a corresponding swirl of emotional highs and lows. Through the chaos of my childhood, creativity became my anchor.

From a very young age, I wrote short stories, filled steno notebooks with mystery novels, and dreamed up song lyrics, often reflective of the personal struggles I was experiencing. By the time I was 11, my younger sister and I had created Carter Enterprises: our imaginary magazine empire. We spent hours designing Teen and YM-style issues (complete with personality assessments, advice columns and features of our favourite teen celebrities), completely lost in the magic of what we were creating.

It wasn’t just play. It was purpose.
Those creative projects gave me something steady to hold onto, something that made me proud, and unknowingly helped me make sense of the chaos around me.

From School Plays to a Bigger Mission

As a teen, creativity kept showing up in my life - in writing primarily but later also in comedy, plays, and improv (one of my friends and I became infamous for transforming boring school assignments into full-blown musical productions scored to Guns N’ Roses tracks.)

That passion for creativity led me to co-found an innovation agency in 2015 with a mission to help people and businesses unlock their creative potential. I’m extremely fortunate to have turned my passion into my livelihood.

But here’s the truth:
Although my life’s work as an innovation strategist is all about creativity and innovation, years of hustling as an ambitious entrepreneur meant putting those personal creative passion projects to the side. You know the ones I’m talking about: the ones that aren’t about obligation, that don’t have any commercial expectations attached to them - but bring a deep level of joy and personal fulfillment. Some may have been started at one point and then abandoned, while others are simply creative sparks, waiting to be nurtured to life.

That Quiet Ache

Maybe you know the feeling, too: that quiet ache that sets in when we stop giving our imaginations room to roam. When we trade creating for producing. Or play for pressure.

I believe so many of us have felt it: a kind of hollow space inside that grows when we push our personal creativity to the sidelines.

But we can reignite it!
This newsletter is about helping each of us reconnect with the creative voice inside of us. Because our best ideas, and our deepest joy, live there. And I believe that tapping into this creative potential will not only bring us joy on a personal level, but also make us exponentially more effective and fulfilled professionally.

Why Creativity Matters Now More Than Ever

And this isn’t just about ourselves. In this new AI era, creativity is no longer just a nice-to-have. The world needs our creativity to thrive.

AI can automate tasks, crunch data, and generate ideas in seconds but it can’t feel. It can’t link wild, unrelated concepts together, stir emotions, or express the essence of what it means to be human like we can when we create.

Maybe, instead of seeing AI as the enemy of creativity, we can see it as a gift.

By taking a LOT of the routine work off our plates, it gives us back one of the most precious creative ingredients: time.

This moment in history is asking us to show up more boldly, more creatively, and more us than ever before - in all realms of our lives.
And I believe the world is craving what only we, as humans, can make.
